CBSE Class 12 Previous Year Questions: A Subject-Wise Guide

24 September 2026 · 6 min read

Previous year questions are the single most reliable source of information about what the Class 12 board paper will actually ask — more reliable than any guide, because they are the board's own record of how it examines each chapter. But what they teach you is different in every subject, and using them the same way across all four wastes most of their value.

Physics — the numerical patterns repeat

Class 12 Physics numericals return to the same handful of setups year after year — a specific circuit configuration, a standard optics arrangement, a particular use of Gauss's law. Working four or five years of a chapter's previous year questions, right after revising that chapter, shows you these patterns directly instead of leaving you to notice them on your own mid-exam.

Pay attention to how marks are distributed within a single question — which step the board typically rewards even when the final answer is wrong. That is information a fresh problem set cannot give you.

Chemistry — where the questions cluster

In Organic Chemistry, previous year questions reveal which named reactions and conversions the board returns to most often — a small set relative to the full syllabus. In Inorganic Chemistry, they show which trends and exceptions are actually tested versus which are in the textbook but rarely asked. Physical Chemistry previous year numericals are worth timing yourself on directly, since the calculation types repeat closely from year to year.

Maths — use them for speed, not just method

By the time a Class 12 student reaches previous year questions, the methods are usually already known from NCERT and classroom practice. What previous year papers add is realistic difficulty and realistic timing — attempt them against the clock, not untimed, or they will not tell you what you need to know about your actual exam-day speed.

Biology — the exact phrasing the board expects

For Biology, previous year questions are less about content surprise and more about phrasing — seeing exactly how the board words a question on Genetics or Human Reproduction tells you what level of precision the model answer expects, which is hard to judge from a textbook alone.

A syllabus warning

CBSE's Class 12 syllabus has been rationalised more than once in recent years, more heavily than Class 10's. A question from an older paper may sit outside the current syllabus entirely. Use older papers to see how a concept is tested, but confirm against the current syllabus and the latest sample paper before assuming a topic will appear.

The order that works

Do previous year questions chapter by chapter, immediately after revising that chapter — not as one large batch at the end. Save full previous year papers, done under timed conditions, for the last few weeks, once every chapter has already been through this process once.
